ABOUT 

Saswat Pattanayak hails from Tigiria, grew up in Bhubaneswar, Orissa, India and lives in New York City.

Saswat is an independent journalist, with a PhD in Journalism Studies from the Philip Merrill College of Journalism, University of Maryland. His research interests focus on the changing discourse of public communication, with emphasis on political journalism across traditional media and the blogosphere. Saswat extensively covers and supports social justice movements, and can be reached at - info@saswat.net

As a photographer, he has taken portraits of Amiri Baraka, Pete Seeger, Sonia Sanchez, Angela Davis, Noam Chomsky, Selma James, Billie Jean King, among others.

Saswat has been accredited as a photojournalist by the NYPD for the New York City, a credentialed media for the Mercedes Benz (and by NYFW) to cover Fashion Weeks, for the Left Forum to cover keynote addresses, among others. 

His photographs have appeared in Elle Magazine (France), Be Magazine (France), Hatier (France), Daily Mail (UK), Sueddeutsche Zeitung (Germany), Grazia Magazine (Italy), Women's Day Magazine (New Zealand), The Telegraph (UK), The Sun (UK),  Macleans (Canada), The Globe and Mail (Canada), L A Times, Huffington Post, NY Daily News, New York Magazine, and New York Post among others. His works have been featured on ABC News, Dr Phil Show, The Kilborn File, CBS, and NBC.

As a journalist, he has worked as a staff writer for Economic Times, The Asian Age and Hindustan Times. His articles have appeared in Mainstream Weekly, Vox Union, Black Agenda Report, New American Media. He is a senior columnist for Kindle Magazine and he regularly contributes to Counter Currents.

As a blogger, he edits the Women's Rights NY blog, Critical School and Radical Notes.
